Newb's Book Club Update

I still haven't read the Lena Dunham book, but I did manage Bridget Jones and Tina Fey.

I don't think I really read much since then until the first hot day of the year which was towards the middle of April I think, when I read We Are All Made of Glue by Marina Lewycka. I chose it randomly from my parents' bookshelf because I wanted something fun to read while I sunbathed in their garden (Book Based Entirely On Its Cover). But, I really enjoyed it and got quite sucked in to the narrative, particularly because the old lady has lots of cats..! It has quite a strange mixture of WW2 history and modern Bridget Jones story telling, and it is all a bit unbelievable and over the place, but I liked all of that as it kept me on my toes.

Then, again from my parents' bookshelf, I read Brick Lane by Monica Ali (I've just realised that I have still only read books by female authors so far). At times it is slightly slow going and has some very sad bits which I found difficult, but overall I liked it. In a weird way I could identify with the main character and her husband, as he always made grand plans that never went anywhere! At 496 pages this came SO close to being the Book Over 500 Pages, but in the end I ticked off Book With A Love Triangle (can you call an affair a love triangle?)

On holiday I read:
  • Love & Dr Devon by Alan Titchmarsh - a very easy read with gentle characters and an interesting plot, but nothing ground breaking there (Book You Can Finish In A Day);
  • Lucy Sullivan Is Getting Married by Marian Keyes - a classic chick lit beach read and there's not a lot more to say about it, but I did like reading it (Book Based On Or Turned Into a TV Show);
  • Inferno by Dan Brown - absolutely loved it but I adore Dan Brown books anyway so I am not hugely shocked by that. I can't wait for the film (A Mystery Or Thriller) and;
  • I, Partridge: We Need To Talk About Alan by Alan Partridge - well. Er. It's Alan Partridge in a book. It's amusing, weird and stupid. Back of the net. (Book A Friend Recommended)

I need to speed up a bit I think, and soon I'll have to start picking books based on whether they will fit the criteria rather than thinking about that afterwards. My next book is a non-fiction baby book (because it's due back at the library on Thursday!)

Does anyone have any ideas for books to fit the tick boxes?
